Microsoft gets behind Open Document Format, Office update in 2009

Microsoft announced it would put its full support and weight behind the OASIS Open Document Format (ODF) version 1.1 support, adding it to Microsoft Office 2007 with the upcoming service pack 2 due out in 2009. Open XML will also be integrated in the coming weeks.

Microsoft has released a developer's guide on how to implement ODF and Open XML via interoperability with Microsoft and other products. They will also be "an active participant in the evolution of ODF, Open XML, XML Paper Specification and PDF standards." They further state having "already made contributions to ODF in OASIS and is actively participating in the maintenance of Open XML in ISO/IEC."

Microsoft does caveat their full acceptance of the standards body governing ODF, however. They state, "1) When implementing a standard, an implementer may find the text ambiguous or more permissive than is appropriate for that particular implementation," and "2) File format standards typically allow additional application-specific information (such as certain user customizations) to be written to the file," and "3) With every application there may be instances where an implementer cannot follow the standard exactly for one reason or another. For example, general industry practice may differ from what is in the specification or users may have made clear that they need something different," according to the press release. This means Microsoft may still introduce Microsoft-specific variations to the ODF standard, being the bane of the open standards idea.

Information about Document Interoperability Initiative (DII) is available at the DocumentInteropinitiative.org website. Microsoft has also given a Q&A interview with Doug Mahugh. And Microsoft's own support for interoperability can be found here.

How to Querying a Web Page in Excel 2003

How to Querying a web page in Excel 2003? In addition to querying Excel workbooks, Access and other database applications, you can also extract dynamic data from a Web page using an Excel query. Querying a Web page in Excel 2003 is a great option if you plan to take out data from a source repetitively.
To create an Excel query that uses a Web page as a data source, you'll need to find the correct URL of the Web page from which you want to retrieve data. Excel 2003 has limited browser capabilities, so you'll need to use a genuine browser to access the Web page you want to query. Copy the complete URL to the clipboard.
Open the worksheet that will receive the queried data. Choose Data > Import External Data > New Web Query. Excel 2003 will open the New Web Query dialogue box. The New Web Query dialogue box will open with your browser's default home page. Paste the URL from the clipboard into the location bar at the top of the New Web Query dialogue box. Click Go, to the right of the location bar.
Excel will carry up the tables available on the Web page you've selected, displayed with a yellow arrow to the left of each available table. To select the table, click the arrow. The yellow arrow will turn into a green check mark. To deselect a table, toggle the green check mark. When it is deselected, it will revert to the yellow arrow symbol. Once you have selected your desired table(s), click the Import button at the bottom of the dialogue box.
When your Web query is complete, Excel will present the Import Data dialogue box. To place data in a spreadsheet click an available cell and click OK. The imported data will appear in the active spreadsheet.
When querying a Web page in Excel 2003, Excel will not preserve the formatting you've applied to data imported from the Web, so each time you run the query, all of your formatting preferences will be lost. You'll also be presented with the External Data toolbar, so you can refresh your data as often as you'd like.

Yahoo Wants Micorsoft's Help

Yahoo Inc. CEO Jerry Yang publicly turned to Microsoft Corp. for help last week, just hours after Google Inc. walked away from a proposed search advertising partnership with his company.

Speaking at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Yang said that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer can just say the word and he will begin negotiating the sale of his company. "I would say that the best thing for Microsoft to do is to buy Yahoo," he said.

In fact, Yang said Yahoo is willing to sell itself for less than the Microsoft offer it rejected last spring.

Yang's move was prompted by Google's announcement that it's abandoning plans to run Google advertisements on Yahoo search results pages. Google said that constant wrangling with advertising groups and government regulators over whether the deal violated antitrust laws was not in the company's best interests.

When plans for the partnership were announced in June, Yahoo projected that the deal would generate $250 million to $450 million during the first year, and up to $800 million annually thereafter.

The financial boost would have come at a good time for Yahoo, which is now cutting costs by laying off 10% of its workforce.

Some industry observers maintain that Google's decision gives Yahoo no choice but to sell itself to a company like Microsoft Office Support Canada or AOL LLC.

"The company was very much relying on the Google deal to stabilize its financial condition," said Mike Masnick, president and CEO of IT research firm Floor64 Inc., on Floor64's Techdirt blog site. "Without that, Yahoo is in trouble."

However, David Card, an analyst at Forrester Research Inc., contended that Yahoo can still survive -- and perhaps thrive -- on its own. He said Yahoo has created a large and loyal audience through the years and has "done a pretty good job of selling advertising."

Noting that the company has also successfully added some Web 2.0 technologies that key competitors lack, Card said, "I don't think they need to be that competitive in search to be a successful online media company."

Do Small Business Fast and Smart with Microsoft Word

One of the issues that most small business owners overlook when starting out in business is the use of technology. Whilst computer technology may require a significant investment when starting out; Overtime, if your systems are built correctly they will in fact save you very large sums of money, in particular in the area of staff wages.

When I first started my business, One-on-One Personal Computer Training, I started out with a $3,000 Credit Card, which when you talk to any business adviser or business-coach is absolutely the worst thing you could do. One of the issues I have been most conscious of is the cost of having a large number of staff. The way I achieved a high level of efficiency in such a competitive market was to automate as many of the day-to-day tasks as I could. The best tasks for business automation are those that are repetitive.

As soon as I mention the word Business Automation, most technophobes will put up a barrier and go into a minor or major fit. Business automation can be as simple as creating just a few Microsoft Word templates. Business automation does not necessarily mean hiring a huge plethora of software developers and toiling day and night to build some monsterous and complex system. It can and should be simple so that you as a business owner can in fact do it yourself. Let me explain!

Online Microsoft Technical Help Canada for all its good and bad issues, has provided business one of the most awesome tools - Microsoft Word allows you to build templates that you can reuse as many times as you wish.

What Is A Microsoft Word Template?

Essentially, a Microsoft Word Template is like any traditional word document, the difference is that it is designed to be reused as many times as you require. Why not create a normal word document then. Well, the difference is that when you use a Microsoft Word Template, you can store the template under the New dialogue box, so that each time you want to use the document you go to that one point and it will be available.

Did you know that you can even create your own folders in the New dialog box? If you didn't know this, all you have to do is to simply create a new folder where all your templates are stored. On each of our company's computers we have a special folder called one-on-one where we store each of our templates for use by our staff.

What Sort Of Templates Might You Need?

This is one of the key questions I get asked the most. The most common templates I see small businesses require are items like Sick Leave Forms, Leave Applications, Order Forms, Sales Letters, Purchase Order Forms and so forth.

One of the reasons why I chose to build Microsoft Word Templates in my business was to ensure a level of continuity of contact with our customers. By building a series of Templates such as:

- A Company Letter Head
- A Company Fax Sheet
- A Company Leave Application
- A Company Thank You Letter
- A Company Weekly Timesheet
- A Company Sales Letter
- A Company Visitor Sign-in Sheet
- A Company Purchase Order Form
- A Company Order Form

By having these forms in a central place I have ensured that my staff does not need to be recreating these styles of documents each time they have to send a letter or fax. Further to this, I know that certain sales letters used by my staff will achieve the sales outcomes that I am looking for. By using a Microsoft Word Template, they know that when they get and enquiry that they can simply fill-in the customer details and the letter is done.

In our sales letter templates we use Microsoft Word Fill-in field to prompt our staff for key information like the Customers Name, Address and Company Name ensuring that the information does get put into the letter. Once they have completed that they simply press the Print button and its ready to go to the customer. As a business owner, knowing that all my staff have to do to achieve the sales makes me feel far more comfortable than them having to write their own customised letters each time a customer enquires about our training.

Microsoft Word templates are an incredibly useful tool in automating common documents that your staff maybe creating and I believe that this is the first process that all business owners should be using in automating their business.

NComputing hires Microsoft exec as chairman

NComputing Inc., the fast-growing Silicon Valley maker of PC-sharing gear, has hired a retiring senior Microsoft Corp. executive as co-chairman.

The Redwood City, Calif., start-up also said it has sold 1 million seats of its desktop virtualization gear, up from 500,000 seats sold the same time last year.

"We are moving from adolescence to maturity," said Stephen Dukker, NComputing's chairman, founder and CEO, in an interview last week.

Dukker will share the chairman spot with Will Poole, who is corporate vice president of Microsoft's Unlimited Potential Group. A 12-year Microsoft veteran, Poole ran the Windows client business until mid-2007.

Microsoft Office Support Canada announced in April that Poole would retire at the end of September to pursue philanthropic and entrepreneurial interests.

Unlimited Potential is Microsoft's effort to make its software cheaper and more accessible for Third World institutions and schools. For instance, Microsoft is offering Windows XP and Microsoft Office to developing nations' schools at a bundled price of $3 per student.

Poole said he began "spearheading some components of Unlimited Potential back in 2003." He said his experience and contacts will help NComputing, whose customers are so far mostly Third World schools, continue to win such deals.

NComputing claims it can offer a plug-and-play way for nontechies to hook up extra monitors and keyboards to a single PC, allowing a single modern PC to serve as many as 30 users.

Its gear is both easier and cheaper to deploy than conventional thin-client or desktop virtualization gear, the company said. About 40% of users run Linux, while 60% run Windows, according to Dukker.

After discussions with Microsoft on the proper interpretation of its licenses for Windows and other software, NComputing now advises users that each PC must have a Windows Server 2003 or 2008 license, and each user workstation hooking up to that PC must pay for a client access license, Dukker said.

For educational clients, the prices are cheap, Dukker said: less than $100 for the Windows Server license, and about $20 per workstation.

Not satisfied with just educational clients, NComputing has started targeting and winning customers among mainstream businesses in both the developed and developing world, though Dukker declined to name specific companies.

Though such customers don't enjoy the same discounts as schools, Dukker said they can still "achieve substantial cost savings over traditional PC deployments."

Some users told Computerworld last year that NComputing's gear didn't always work perfectly. In particular, some applications tended to crash or did not run multiple instances under NComputing's technology.

Dukker said many of those problems were related to older software that wasn't written to comply with Microsoft recommendations. "Anything that can win a Windows logo certification will run well in our environment, though we've gone further to mitigate app compat issues for programs not written to be multiuser-aware," Drukker said. He noted that NComputing has solved problems with Web-based software that used the same IP address for multiple users and "sandboxed the I/O components" of other troublesome apps.

NComputing's technology can also run in conjunction with Microsoft Virtual PC or VMware Inc.'s VMware Player to virtualize any remaining troublesome applications, Dukker said.

Google's Chrome Browser Not Yet Secure

Google Chrome browser is only a day old, but security researchers already have found vulnerabilities that can be exploited. According to a report published by ZDNet, security researcher Aviv Raff has found that he can combine a flaw in the open source WebKit engine with a Java bug to dupe Google Chrome users into downloading executable files.

Apple, which uses WebKit in its Safari browser, fixed this flaw with its Safari 3.1.2 browser patch. Chrome uses an older version of WebKit that has not been repaired. Another security researcher, Rishi Narang, claimed to have found a way to crash Google Chrome with a malicious link.

"An issue exists in how chrome behaves with undefined-handlers in chrome.dll version 0.2.149.27," Narang explained on the Evil Fingers Web site. "A crash can result without user interaction. When a user is made to visit a malicious link, which has an undefined handler followed by a 'special' character, the Chrome crashes with a Google Chrome message window 'Whoa! Google Chrome has crashed. Restart now?' "

And someone identified as "Nerex" has posted proof-of-concept JavaScript code on Milw0rm.com that supposedly "allows files (e.g., executables) to be automatically downloaded to the user's computer without any user prompt."

This exploit appears to be similar to the one identified by Raff.

In theory, Google Chrome should be more secure than other browsers because, rather than being a single-threaded application, each tab is handled by its own sandboxed process with its own memory space. Like a multiengine plane, Chrome is designed not to crash following the loss of a single engine.

"[Chrome] utilizes technology that has historically been associated with operating systems to create isolation between different browser tabs with the aim of improved crash-resistance and security," IDC analyst Al Hilwa said in a research note. "The security capabilities also ensue from a new sandbox model that strengthens what is typically available today from other browsers."But Chrome is beta software and remains a work in progress.

Hilwa observes that while Google's security architecture isolates the browser's kernel from attacks on rendering-engine vulnerabilities, it doesn't extend this same protection to plug-ins like Java, Flash, and Silverlight.

Mozilla software engineer Robert O'Callahan in a blog post said that while Chrome looks promising, Google's coders still have challenges to overcome. "There are some interesting architectural problems they haven't solved yet, especially with the process separation model, especially with regard to windowless plugins, and also Mac," he said. "These are problems that will be encountered by anyone doing process separation so it will be interesting to see how that goes."

Microsoft Word - A Small Introduction

Microsoft Word is Microsoft's flagship word processing software. It was first released in 1983 under the name Multi-Tool Word for Xenix systems. Versions were later written for several other platforms including IBM PCs running DOS (1983), the Apple Macintosh (1984), SCO UNIX, OS/2 and Microsoft Windows (1989). It is a component of the Microsoft Office system; however, it is also sold as a standalone product and included in Microsoft Works Suite. Beginning with the 2003 version, the branding was revised to emphasize Word's identity as a component within the Office suite; Microsoft began calling it Microsoft Office Word instead of merely Microsoft Word. The latest releases are Word 2007 for Windows and Word 2008 for Mac OS X.

Microsoft Office - A Small Introduction

Microsoft Office is a set of interrelated desktop applications, servers and services, collectively referred to as an office suite, for the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Office was introduced by Microsoft in 1989 on Mac OS, with a version for Windows in 1990. Initially a marketing term for a bundled set of applications, the first version of Office contained Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. Additionally, a "Pro" version of Office included Microsoft Access and Schedule Plus. Over the years, Office applications have grown substantially closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, OLE data integration and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Microsoft also positions Office as a development platform for line-of-business software under the Office Business Applications (OBA) brand.

The current versions are Office 2007 for Windows, launched on January 30, 2007, and Office 2008 for Mac OS X, released January 15, 2008. Office 2007/Office 2008 features a new user interface and a new OOXML-based primary file format (docx, xlsx, pptx). Microsoft has made available a free add-on known as the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack" that lets Office 2000-2003 editions open, edit, and save documents created under the new Office 2007 formats.
